James McKenzie of 8F has beaten off competition from an estimated 14,000 entrants for the latest instalment of the BBC’s Serious… series. Previous series have seen eight children discovering locations like the Amazon, the Arctic and also the Jungles of Borneo! Not for the feint hearted!

In July James will be leaving the country for four weeks and arriving in China, planting his feet firmly in the footsteps of the famous 13th century explorer Marco Polo. He will be travelling the extreme route Marco took along the legendary Silk Road in search of far eastern treasures.

The Silk Road will take him through the Taklamakan Desert, called the ‘desert of ghosts’ by Marco Polo, as part of a camel train. James will also climb along the ‘roof of the world’ meeting local tribes-peoples and experiencing how they survive in some of the most remote places in the Himalayas.

The expedition will feature in an 11 part documentary due to air in early 2010. What a fantastic achievement, well done James!
