On Tuesday 12th February, Year 11 GCSE Applied Business students were lucky enough to secure places on the Heathrow Terminal 5 customer trials. Heathrow Terminal 5 opens next month and will be the new home for British Airways flights. Baa, the company that owns the airport opened up the terminal for selected guests to have a behind the scenes look at how the airport will be running when it opens in a few weeks.

The students got to take on the role of departing passengers travelling to Leon in France. We had to check in and go through security. Baa are making sure all their staff are well trained so there will not be long queues when they have customers wanting to board flights when the terminal opens for real. The security checks took ages, we had to take our shoes off and all hand luggage had to be thoroughly checked. We also took part in a fire evacuation within the terminal; this was to make sure the staff knew how to safely escort all passengers out the terminal in an emergency.

The students are completing their final piece of coursework on Baa and they are focussing on the people that work at Baa. This was an excellent insight into how the employees all work together to ensure the safe and smooth running of the airport.
