In March the National Book Reading Week took me to Bartons Infants School to read “Julian's Tree House” to the six and seven year old children.
As a Russian speaker, I was invited to read to the children in both English and Russian, because there are a number of children in the area who do not have English as their first language.
I was introduced to the children by their teacher Miss Ivalls and we decided to get the children to speak a little Russian, especially as one of the boys I would be reading to comes from Russia. I taught them how to say “Good morning Miss Ivalls“ which translates “Dobri Utrah Miss Ivalls”. The children all had a turn and they did very well. The Russian lad was unsure about saying it, as he has been told by his family that he must only speak English now he lives here in England. His Grandmother only speaks Russian and lives with his family, so Miss Ivalls suggested that he speaks Russian and English with her and that way he will remember his own language as well as helping Granny with her English.
The storytelling went very well and I was impressed by the questions being asked about the “Julian's Tree House” and how the children remembered so many words which were alien to them.
When I left the class at the end, it was obvious that they had enjoyed the story telling and I hope that I will be able to do this again next year. Ray Fitzgerald

Dear Felpham Community College,
Thank you so much for entering the Giving Nation Awards this year. We have been really impressed with
your online entry - so impressed that you have won our prize for the month of March! We are delighted to
congratulate you on winning this 'Send A Cow' prize for Elliot Jones' incredible work raising money and
awareness for the campaign to save St Richard's Hospital A and E and Maternity departments. We found his
hair-raising commitment to the cause and independent endeavour to be particularly astounding.
As you know, we are running a monthly award scheme for online awards entries. The prizes for these
awards have been bought from 'Send a Cow' and 'World Vision', two international development charities that
purchase livestock, training and resources for people in some of the poorest communities around the
world. These gifts help to provide families with a lasting reliable income and the means to find a way
out of poverty.
Congratulations! It's great to see you storming ahead with your entry and we're really looking forward to seeing your school's entry develop. Dylan Jessop
