On Thursday 7th June, Felpham Community College hosted the annual West Sussex
West Girls' Rounders Tournament. This is an extremely big
event with more than ten schools entering in both the U14
and U15 age groups. The girls played extremely well against
tough opposition (including several independent schools),
winning the U14 Tournament unbeaten. Congratulations to
the team:
Hannah Johnstone (Captain)
Jess McKenzie
Finaly Powell
Megan Thompson
Rachel Norris
Georgia Sargent
Alex Austin
Sophie Masters
Rebecca Dick
A special thanks must also go to all the JSLAs who helped
to run the event.
Well Done!

Sun safety becomes a major issue at this time of year and one that is often over looked when a student
is at School. We all realise our children are in danger whilst on the beach or on holiday but a lot of
us forget that scheduled breaks, sports lessons and lunch breaks take place when UV rays are at their
strongest. Skin that is less than twenty years old burns three times as quickly as older skin therefore
young people are three times more likely to suffer from Sunstroke, Sunburn and Skin Cancer later in life
if their skin is damaged by UV rays when very young.
We aim to make protective sunscreen creams a part of everyday life in the Spring and Summer terms and
recommend that students apply a cream of at least factor 15 or above that lasts for eight hours or more
before coming into the College. Students that are at a higher risk of damage such as fair skinned or with
red hair would ideally use a higher factor cream and bring an extra supply with them so that they can
apply it again during periods of outside activity. 80% of sun damage occurs to skin before the age of
twenty-one and the College recognises its responsibility to educate and promote healthy skin awareness
to all its students.
Dehydration contributes to any sun related illness and the College continues to request that students
always bring a plastic bottle of fresh drinking water which can be refilled from the fountains situated
around the College during break times, during very hot periods there will also be fresh water in the
canteen and this year we have purchased water barrels that will be placed in outside areas so that water
is always readily available. The College vending machines also sell a selection of both plain and
flavoured waters for purchase by students again during break times. Advice on health is always available
from the medical room and by promoting awareness of both the importance of drinking at least seven
glasses of water a day and staying safe and protected in the sun we hope to ensure our students go on
into later life with not only healthy skin but a healthy attitude to protecting and maintaining their
own bodies. Mrs D. Graham, Welfare Assistant
