What do we do?

The role of the Governing Body is to conduct the college with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement at the school. They have a responsibility to focus on three core strategic functions:

  •  setting the school's vision, ethos and strategic direction;

  • holding the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils;

  •  overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

In working to ensure the effective performance of the college the governing body makes key decisions about:

  • the strategic direction of the college,

  • monitoring and acting on data and performance information,

  • providing positive challenge,

  • making appointments such as the Headteacher,

  • engaging closely with the SLT and curriculum leaders to understand how issues are progressing, and

  • making decisions that contribution to improving the teaching and learning environment and standards throughout the college. 

How do we operate?

The full Governing Body meets once a month to consider all business. It produces an annual programme to work to ensure that all issues are covered on the appropriate monthly agenda.

When the governing body needs to examine a specific issue in detail it can create a Task and Finish Group consisting of a few governors, staff and if necessary external advisors or contributors. They often go into great depth and then produce overview reports and recommendations for the full governing body to consider.

Individual governors are allocated the responsibility for monitoring and progressing aspects of governance and to report back to the governing body when decisions are needed. These roles include:

  • Curriculum

  •  Finance

  • Quality of Teaching

  •  Data

  • Special Educational Needs and Disability

  • Safeguarding

  •  Pupil Premium

  • Governor Learning and Development

How do we set and monitor priorities?

To provide a structure to ensure timely formulation of priorities and the effective monitoring of their delivery there is a Monitoring, Evaluation and Review (MER) cycle.

This provides an annual calendar that normally includes:

-          April/May - surveys of stakeholders, parents, staff and governors

-          June - meetings of SLT and the governors Strategy and Visioning Group

-          June - discussions with staff to finalise priorities

-          July - draft priorities for Whole College Quality Plan and Curriculum Quality Plans

-          September - presentations from curriculum/subject/year leaders on priorities/actions

-          September - governors agree final plans following examination results

-          October - detailed consideration of plans and the SLT role in their delivery

-          February - formal mid-year reviews of plans

-          General - routine visits and reporting to monitor curriculum plans, thematic areas 

      and specific policy delivery

What have we been doing?

The governing body provides information on the governance arrangements in place, the work it has been undertaking in the past year and gives an assessment of the effectiveness and impact of the governing body.
