Key Stage 3

Assessment

The government has ended the use of National Curriculum levels to measure progress at key stage 2 and key stage 3.  Schools have now been left to devise their own systems to measure progress with the aim of being simpler than the old levels system.

Felpham Community College has developed an assessment system based around learning outcomes. These learning outcomes are linked directly to our Schemes of Work (ie. what we teach) which have been written from the new National Curriculum and with the GCSE draft specifications in mind.

We will measure student progress against what is expected for them to know, understand and do at different ages when compared to all students nationally, (ie. age-related expectations). If a student is working in-line with age-related expectations then we say they are working in the Securing category.  If they are working above age-related expectations, then they are working in the Exceeding category; and above that (the highest category) is Excelling.  Similarly, if a student is not yet working at the age-related expectation then they are working in the Developing category; and below that (the lowest category) is Foundation.

Curriculum Leaders have created age related learning outcome grids. These grids describe the outcomes which students would need to demonstrate on a piece of work or project to be assessed in one of the five categories: Foundation, Developing, Securing, Exceeding and Excelling. In developing the age related outcomes, Curriculum Leaders have reviewed the ‘Expert Subject Advisory Group’ work for their area.

In making judgements about which category is the ‘best fit’ teachers will have been confident that students are on track to complete all learning outcome for that category by the end of the year.  Please click on the links below to view the learning outcomes for years 7-9.

The learning outcome grids makes assessment simpler and clearer for staff, students and parents. It clearly communicates next steps for students. Students are assessed against the learning outcomes at least once each half term. The style of assessment is varied and can be viewed by clicking on the Assessment tab.

As students progress through Years 7, 8 and 9 the learning outcomes become increasingly more challenging.  The outcomes for the middle category ‘Securing’ have been written to ensure that Year 9 students will have met the National Curriculum objectives (ie the age-related expectations). Students who arrive at Felpham Community College from primary school at a level 4b or higher in English and maths should be meeting, or going above, the end of Key Stage 3 age-related expectations.  A ‘securing’ assessment at the end of Year 9 is therefore also an indicator for a new GCSE grade 5, (which is equivalent to an old GCSE grade C+/B-).

Student’s attitude to learning is also regularly assessed using the grades 1-4. Please click here to view the criteria.
