What is coaching and how does it work at Felpham?

Coaching is a shared process where a coach and teaching colleague work in partnership to share good practice and try new activities in the classroom. The coach will observe a lesson and in a subsequent conversation, draw out points that worked well and how the teaching colleague could change something in the lesson. The next step then is to research and put into practice ways of changing the lesson. The coach will observe all or part of the lesson where new strategies and approaches are put into practice. Coaches will also work on these strategies in their own classrooms. Regular contact between coach and colleague will take place; however, this does not always take place formally, but can be a less formal meeting in the staffroom, for example. From September, coaches will be working on a rolling programme working with curriculum areas and volunteers from those areas, matters that were identified in the recent Ofsted report; questioning skills, effective use of lesson objectives and group work.
