Group Work

“…you should use the best seating arrangement for each activity.”
Professional Teacher Magazine, Summer 2009

Group work is a phrase that means so much!

  • It assumes “work” is completed, not by individuals, but as a group effort.
  • It implies ideas are shared
  • Important points are discussed and ordered in priorities
  • Primary and secondary sources are referred to and selected for their relevance by the group consensus.

As a classroom teacher of varied groups of individuals in front of us, we need to think of the benefits of group work. We also need to plan and prepare for as many ‘pitfalls’ as we can – for example, what if Zoe is away one lesson, will the group work I have set up still work? If students enjoy and prefer working in a group, we need to think what type of learners they are as well. Finally, if some students are reluctant to take part in the group activity, what skills can we give them to help them get involved?

Come and share your ideas and successes regarding group work at our various workshops, learning and teaching meetings and lunchtime gatherings. These all take place throughout the year.

We look forward to seeing you.
