Overview

GCE Applied Awards are part of a new suite of vocationally-focused AS and A levels. These awards
incorporate AS and A2 level units. The wide range of units available are flexibly structured to give
candidates plenty of choice to form qualifications which can be highly individual to their personal
aptitudes, interests and ambitions. This flexibility of structure allows teachers to tailor the course
to their own areas of expertise and as a result enhance teaching and learning.

At AS level, single (3 unit) and double (6 unit) AS awards are available. At A2 level, single (6 unit)
and double (12 unit) A2 awards are available. Grades are awarded from A-E for both single awards and
AA-EE for both double awards.

These broad-based awards provide significantly more vocationalism than before and are designed to
provide a vocational alternative to traditional A levels. Using work-related contexts, innovative
teaching and assessment methods, these awards offer a broad introduction to the vocational area studied
and provide the opportunity for students to interact with the industry environment allowing then the
opportunity to experience current and authentic practices. These awards are designed to provide a
progression route to Higher Education and further training for employment.

As with other A levels, AS units and A2 units are equally weighted. Assessment is 33% externally tested
(exams) and 67% internally assessed (portfolio evidence).

A minimum level of five GCSEs, including English, at Grade C or above is required, or a BTEC First

Students who do not meet these requirements are strongly advised to follow a BTEC First Diploma course.
We have had considerable success with students who have undertaken three years in the Sixth Form.
