International Week

Felpham Community College celebrated different cultures the week beginning the 8th November for their traditional International Week. Students and staff were given opportunities to engage in a variety of activities celebrating the range of cultures that makes our community. The events included the traditional International Bake-off, which saw a record number of 43 entries! Students were given a country they had to bake something from. The winners were Milena Elkins and Evie Colwell, year 8 students, with a magnificent Greek cake.

A new addition to this year’s celebration was the FCC International Masterchef – 30 students across the year groups and 6 members of staff were allocated in 6 teams (Team Africa, Team Greece, Team Mexico, Team Eastern Europe, Team Italy and Team Spain). The students had to plan and cook a 3-course meal in 100 minutes on Wednesday 10 November. The Rotary Clubs from Bognor and Hotham kindly agreed to sponsor the event and provided the ingredients to all 6 teams.

Mark Anstiss, Headteacher, and John Bailey from The Rotary Club of Bognor and Hotham had the difficult task of judging the fantastic range of traditional dishes. After a very close competition, Team Mexico were crowned winners of this first edition. The winning team were given a trophy and an apron each funded by the Rotary.

Mr Cauchy-Duval, Curriculum Leader for Modern Languages commented, ‘the objective of International Week is to raise awareness of the importance of studying a language in a multi-cultural society. Both staff and students have enjoyed taking part in all the activities we planned, including a form time quiz and an International ‘Just Dance’ competition. Thank you to the Rotary Club for their support. The week has been a great success and we look forward to doing it again next year even bigger and better!”

Milena Elkins and Evie Colwell, year 8 students commented, “we read a book about Greece and that gave us our inspiration to create a flag cake. The icing took ages! It was exciting to win. The week was good fun. We also did the dance competition which was funny, but also quite difficult to follow the routines!”
