As a curriculum area the Modern Foreign Languages department aims to foster a positive atmosphere where students can gain confidence in learning a foreign language and also gain an insight and understanding of different cultures and traditions. In Key Stage 3 students have five lessons per fortnight. In year 7 students study French and in year 8 and 9 Spanish is offered as an additional language to students who have shown greater linguistic ability and flair.
The main programmes of work in each year of Key Stage 3 are summarised as follows with further details contained in schemes of work:
The GCSE in Spanish is a lively and academically challenging course which builds on the foundations laid at KS3. It is not suitable for students who have not previously studied Spanish. Students continue to develop their skills in Spanish and build on their grammatical understanding across a range of topics.
