Due to the introduction of a Red Weather Warning affecting the Bognor Regis area, the school will be open tomorrow morning but will close at the end of Period 4.

Arrangements for the day are as follows:

• The school will operate as normal during the morning session.
• Breaktime: The canteen will be open as usual.
• Lunchtime: A restricted menu will be available for students who wish to have something to eat before leaving.
• Students who do not wish to stay for lunch will be permitted to leave at the end of Period 4.

If you would prefer your child to remain in school until the end of the normal school day, please contact the school so that we can make appropriate supervision arrangements.

We strongly advise that all students follow guidance on staying safe in extreme hot weather, including:

• Keeping well hydrated
• Avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight
• Wearing appropriate clothing and sun protection
• Not going near open water or the beach unless supervised by a responsible adult

On Monday 15^th June, selected year 7 students took part in a beach clean and art workshop, facilitated by Saltwater Creations.

Saltwater Creations is a local CIC who aim to connect people with themselves and nature – particularly the beautiful coastlines we have around our local area.

Students visited Bognor beach, combing an area for items not supposed to be there! They then returned to school and had an art workshop, looking at how beach finds can be turned into art, creating unique canvases to display around FCC. The students who were chosen to attend this event are either FCC Student Eco Committee members, or students who took the time last term to complete ‘The Big Plastic Count’  – a national initiative which ran back in March – the UKs biggest people-powered investigation into plastic waste. We are running the event again in July for the same group of students from years 8,9 and 10.

Tali Swain, Head Student in charge of Student Voice, commented:
“It was a great opportunity to remind us how lucky we are to live by the beach and that we shouldn’t take it for granted. It is the perfect landscape to improve health and mental well-being, and we need to educate others to help look after it. When we did the beach clean, we found items that would wash into the sea for years – like plastic wrappers, bottle tops and larger items including a pair of socks and a toy motorbike! The art part of the day was good fun, we had to use items found on the beach and be creative with it. The boards we made are to be displayed to educate other students at Felpham that we should be looking after our amazing local coastline.”

On Thursday 19^th May, the Felpham Community College Dance Team performed at ‘Dance House’. This was held at Worthing Pavilion and is a chance for local schools to showcase their students and their dance skills. Roughly 15 local primary and secondary schools took part in this event.

The FCC Dance Team is made up of talented students from years 7,8,9 and 10. They performed an upbeat hip-hop and street-dance fusion piece called ‘Turn up the Music’. The group have been working on this routine since January, practising every week in the extra-curricular class.

Miss Feldberg, Teacher of Dance at FCC, commented:

“Our students absolutely shone with their performance – they lit up the stage! They have been practising for months and their hard work truly paid off. Our team represented FCC brilliantly, not just on stage but in the audience too – cheering the loudest, supporting every school, and showing such passion and kindness throughout the day. With around 15 local primary and secondary schools taking part, our students stood out for their enthusiasm and teamwork. We received so many lovely comments about their positivity and how fantastic their piece was, and I couldn’t be prouder of each and every one of them”

At Felpham Community College, the Student Council plays a vital role with student voice and helping make vairous decisions about school life. The Council is made up of Representatives from each year group, and over the last few years has grown considerably in popularity with now over 120 Reps in total.  They are headed up by the Student Leadership Team, 6 year 13 students who have specific leadership roles.

The Council is involved with a wide varity of activites – from supporting charity events, to being the student voice for form groups with information and events, to giving opinions on things such as canteen and curriculum provision. They have also recently been involved with staff interviews, and tours for Korean visitors to FCC.

On Tuesday 2^nd June, FCC held an End of Year Student Council Event, a chance to say thank you and well done to Student Council Representatives for their work this year.

Mr Summers, Assistant Headteacher, commented:
“Being part of the Council is voluntary, and students meet once a half term within each year group and then complete actions from these meetings throughout the school year. It is great to have so many students putting themselves forward for this role. Our End of Year Event was a good opportunity for everyone to meet together and see what we have achieved over the year. We wanted to give students a chance to develop skills, but also have some fun! Workshops included getting creative with lego and visualising our Rights (from our Rights Respcting Gold Award), taste testing new canteen ideas and giving feedback on our canteen provision, becoming literacy short story specialists, learning team working skills and even learning how to work as a team and play Boom Whackers!

We are grateful we have such a strong Student Counicil at Felpham and look forward to continue to grow this next academic year”
