Felpham Community College finished their Year 5 ‘Magic Moments’ initiative this week, hosting students from Barton’s, Bersted Green and Rose Green.

Since January, year 5 students from 9 local primary schools have visited FCC, to get a taste of what secondary school is like. Over 500 students have visited in total. They have all had a tour of the school, completed an activity and had a question and answer session with Felpham students. Activities this year have included ‘Spellbinding’ in drama, ‘Dragon Sleighing’ in science, creating giant space posters in art, and completing a languages carousel.

This week, students from Rose Green, Barton’s and Bersted Green made and decorated their own bread creations in food technology (photos showcase these days).

Mr Summers, Assistant Headteacher, commented:
“Our Magic Days have run for over 10 years and we really enjoy giving the younger students the chance to see the difference between a primary and secondary school. It’s a great opportunity for them to see that the move from key stage 2 to key stage 3 education is exciting and not something to be worried about. Our year 9 student helpers are always fantastic at supporting the events and the visitors”

Felpham Community College welcomed a group of international teachers at the beginning of June, as part of an exchange programme beween the South Korean government and Chichester University.

The South Korean teachers teach English as a second language back in their country. They came to the UK to gain a deeper understanding of the language, culture and educational system. Within their time at FCC, they have completed observations of lessons within various departments of the school including English, modern languages and humanities. They have also taught some lessons to FCC students – including how to write your name in Korean, play traditional Korean games and learn about festivals and traditions.

Mrs Cauchy-Duval, Teacher of Modern Languages commented:
“Our students have enjoyed the exchange and have learnt a lot about the culture and traditions of South Korea. A group of our FCC Student Councillors also had the opportunity to have a Q&A session with them, where they talked about life in Korea, education and politics, which everyone enjoyed. The teachers and the supervisors of the programme have complemented us on how well our students conduct themselves, and their participation and engagement.”

It was fabulous to see a group of Felpham Community College students taking part in the VE Day celebrations in Felpham Village on Saturday 10^th May.

There were FCC students running a History display stand, showcasing entries to the Key Stage 3 History competition which ran at school in support of VE Day.

There were students performing – reciting diary entries from the era, and jokes.  There was also Callum from year 12 performing some Frank Sinatra songs, he was even asked for his autograph! Ms Pike, Headteacher, concluded the FCC performance giving a reading on ‘Inspirational Women in the War’.

Students also enjoyed discussing their history work with Ms Griffiths, local MP, who attended the event.

Ms Pike, Headteacher, commented:
“Well done to all our students who took part in the history competition and also attended the event. It was a fantastic community event and great for us, as a community college, to take part. Our students were a credit for the work they produced, the performances, and for attending the event with such enthusiasm. I was proud to be there supporting them!”

Felpham Community College are pleased to congratulate Grace, Harley and Maisie, all year 7 students, for having their stories selected to be published in a national competition.

Miss Stacey, Teacher of English commented:
“Screen Your Story’ is a wonderful opportunity for all young storytellers. This is the competition where students not only get the chance to be a published author, but may even have their story made into a film. FCC students from years 7, 8 and 9 were all offered the opportunity to enter a story into the competition. Grace, Harley and Maisie’s stories were selected as winners and will now be published in the collection ‘Stories of the Young’. Additionally, they have all been invited to attend the gala in June to be awarded their own copy of their published work. Well done to all our students who entered the competition and a big congratulations to our winning 3.”

The Felpham Community College Dance Team has gone from strength to strength over the last few years, performing at numerous events and showcases. One of the events FCC supports every year is Dance House, an event which runs for local secondary schools at Worthing Pavilion in both the Spring and Summer Term.

The Summer Term Dance House event took place on Thursday 24^th April, where FCC had a team of dancers perform a piece titled ‘Fools Rush In’.

Miss Crocker, Dance Teacher at FCC commented:
“This was a contemporary piece based around the idea of being tied up by unwanted emotions. The dancers used elastics on stage to wrap around themselves and each other.

The dancers, students from year 7 through to year 11, were high off their win at Felpham’s Got Talent, our school talent show held last term. At Dance House, they produced an even cleaner routine on the Worthing Pavilion stage. They have worked so hard and have created great friendships between them within the group. They are teamwork geniuses and I am so proud of them all!

We are now getting ready for our Dance Show Case at FCC in June.”

Felpham Community College held a Key Stage 3 history homework competition over the Easter holidays, looking at what life was like around Felpham around VE day.

Ms McAuley, Curriculum Leader for History commented:
“As a history department, we have been amazed at how many fabulous entries we received across years 7, 8 and 9. Well done to everyone who researched and submitted an entry – the history department, Ms Pike and Governors were blown away by the entries.

Entries will be displayed at the Felpham VE Day celebration, taking place on Saturday 10th May at Felpham Memorial Hall. This is a local community event and open to all – starting at 3pm. As well as having a group of our students attending the event to run our history stall, we also have some amazing year 9 drama students, and our very talented Callum from year 12, performing at the event. We hope to see some of you there!”

They will be introducing themselves to students next week in assemblies.

A continuing focus for Felpham Community College this academic year has been a big drive on attendance, and how every lesson counts. Attendance Awards have been awarded in assembly every fortnight – a trophy to the Form in each year group who has had the best overall attendance for that 2-week period. 

On the 3^rd April, FCC held an Attendance Rewards Event for the Spring Term.  This was a chance to reward the form group from each year group who has had the best attendance overall for the term. 150 students in total were invited to come and collect a free ice cream and hot chocolate as a well done for having the best attendance within their year group. This event took place at the end of the Autumn Term as well, and will continue into Summer, as a continued drive for the school on making every lesson count.

“A big well done to all students at Felpham, our attendance has been above the national average this academic year and we want to continue to improve it.  Other attendance initiatives we have started include our tutors having 1-2-1 meetings with key students, who may need extra support with getting into school, and ongoing rewards in assemblies.

Thank you to Pinks Ice Cream Parlour in Bognor who came in and supported our end of term event. We are proud of how our students have improved attendance this term and aim to continue next term!”
